Review: Calendar Girls - King's Theatre, Glasgow

Written By Lisa Davidson on Wednesday, 31 August 2011 | 16:03

Baring all in Glasgow for one final time, Calendar Girls has an all-star cast featuring Lynda Bellingham, Debbie Chazen, Camilla Dallerup, Jennifer Ellison, Jan Harvey, Rula Lenska, June Watson and Ruth Madoc with Bruno Langley playing Lawrence the photographer and Joe McGann as John.

For the uninitiated, like me, who haven't seen the film of the same name, Calendar Girls is based on the true story of the efforts of the WI in Carcoe, Yorkshire who rallied together to raise funds for the Leukaemia Research Fund when local resident, John Baker, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Tim Frith's moving dramatisation is an emotional rollercoaster. Infused with enough British humour to offset the heartbreaking reality of the all too familiar story on stage, the audience is effortlessly swept from crying to laughing and, importantly, without it jarring. As the illness takes hold of John, Joe McGann's transformation is both shocking and poignant. It is a haunting reminder of how ruthless the disease is and stays with you long after the curtain falls. Jan Harvey's portrayal of Annie, John's widow, highlights the devastation leukaemia leaves in its wake sensitively and acknowledges the agony of grief without apology. Harvey is brilliant in a role that must be emotionally exhausting to portray night after night.
Although impossible to forget the loss and the man who inspired the calendar, the real stars of the play are the formidable women of the WI. All of the characters are lovable and I’m sure that everyone knows a Chris, Celia, Jessie and, sadly, Annie who is John’s widow. June Watson is scene-stealing as Jessie, Lynda Bellingham is a tour de force as Chris and Ruth Madoc is perfectly cast as the overbearing Chair of the WI, Marie.

In an ensemble piece like this, it is difficult to highlight individuals when the group chemistry delivers on so many levels. It speaks volumes about the capable cast that it's difficult to believe that they haven't been friends for years, catching up weekly at the WI, sniggering at slide shows about broccoli and their joyous portrayal of true friendship is incredibly moving but also provides much of the British humour that is the lifeblood of the play.

As this is the last time the show will be in Glasgow, make sure you don't miss out on sharing this moving and British experience that has become a global phenomenon. Don't forget to bring your tissues and give what you can to the Leukaemia Research charity collectors on the way out. Calendar Girls is a fitting reminder that there is still a lot of work to be done to tackle cancer and the original calendar girls from Carcoe have successfully raised over £3 million to date for Leukaemia Research.

NOEL & GERTIE Starring Helena Blackman and Ben Stock To Get London Revival At Cockpit Theatre

Noël & Gertie

An entertainment devised by Sheridan Morley
With the words and music of Noël Coward

starring Ben Stock & Helena Blackman

Director/Designer Thom Southerland
Choreographer Stewart Nicholls
Musical Supervisor Michael Bradley
Lighting Designer Howard Hudson
Producer/Casting Director Danielle Tarento

The creative team behind the acclaimed production of Parade at Southwark Playhouse are reunited for a major revival of Noël & Gertie, Sheridan Morley’s hit play about Noël Coward and Gertrude Lawrence, that
originally ran in the West End for nine years.

Noël & Gertie, starring Helena Blackman and Ben Stock, directed by Thom Southerland, produced by Danielle Tarento, will get a major revival at the Cockpit Theatre from Tuesday 27th September - Saturday 22nd October. Press night is Friday 30th September at 7.30pm.

This witty and moving show, affectionately crafted from diaries and letters between Coward and his stage partner, Gertrude Lawrence, tells the story of the professional and personal relationship between two of this century's greatest stage personalities. Although they only appeared in two productions together, Private Lives and Tonight at 8.30, Noël Coward and Gertrude Lawrence epitomised an era of high style and elegance. The songs, sketches and snippets of scenes pieced together in Noël & Gertie have the entrancing effect of accurately portraying this remarkable duo and the era they helped to define.

Helena Blackman was nominated for a TMA Award as Best Actress in a Musical in 2008 for her  starring role as Nellie Forbush in the UK number 1 tour of South Pacific. She starred as Helen Fogel in the West End premiere of Stephen Sondheim's Saturday Night at Jermyn Street Theatre. She was a runner up in the TV contest How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?

Ben Stock’s West End roles include Eugene in Grease, Over My Shoulder - The Jessie Matthew Story, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! On tour he played Lumiere in Disney’s Beauty & The Beast.

Director Thom Southerland recently directed the acclaimed revival of Parade at Southwark Playhouse. He was named Best Director at the 2011 Off West End Theatre Awards  for Me and Juliet at the Finborough. He directed the European premiere of I Sing!, Divorce Me, Darling!, Annie Get Your Gun, The Pajama Game and sold-out all-male adaptations of Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore and The Mikado (all at the Union Theatre).

Produced by Danielle Tarento, who recently produced Parade and the sold-out Company, both at Southwark Playhouse. She is co-founder of the Menier Chocolate Factory and co-produced all in-house shows 2004- 2006, including Sunday In The Park With George, which received a West End transfer and 5 Olivier awards.

Fasten Your Seatbelts... Global Internet Sensations Fascinating Aïda Are Flying In To London's West End With CHEAP FLIGHTS!

Fasten your seatbelts... global internet sensations
Fascinating Aïda

are flying in for their first West End season since 2003!
Britain's best loved comedy cabaret trio, Fascinating Aïda are to play their first West End season since 2003 when their acclaimed Fascinating Aïda Cheap Flights show lands at Charing Cross Theatre for a five-week season from Monday 5th December - Saturday 7th January.

Press night is Wednesday 7th December at 7.30pm

Captain Dillie Keane, navigator Adele Anderson and their new flight attendant Sarah-Louise Young look forward to a long haul in the West End following their acclaimed, 100% sold-out success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where they received a clutch of four and five star reviews and performed on BBC 2’s The Review Show.

With a 50-date sold out UK tour as well, the ladies are considering 2011 as perhaps their finest ever vintage!

Legends on the UK cabaret scene for 28 years, Fascinating Aïda have recently become a global internet sensation with more than seven million YouTube hits for their anthem to budget travel, ‘Cheap Flights’. The video has now been watch by literally millions of people worldwide, has graced the home-page of a certain Irish discount airline's website, been Tweeted by The Economist as a method of cheering-up the nation and has been described as "very clever and very funny" by the editors at Travel Weekly, the national newspaper of the travel industry... And so they have named their new show after this scurrilous expose of the cheap flights industry!

Fascinating Aïda Cheap Flights includes several numbers hot off the press plus a few old favourites, including 'The Dogging Song', a fond homage to the joys of al fresco sex described last year by The Times as "…the dirtiest & funniest song of the century so far".

Fascinating Aïda was founded in March 1983 by Dillie Keane, along with Marilyn Cutts and Lizzie Richardson. Adele Anderson joined in 1984 and along with Dillie Keane has been the longest serving member. The trio started performing in a West End wine bar, but they soon caught the media attention, and performed on TV for the first time in July 1983. Over the years, they have earned three Laurence Olivier Awards nominations for Best Entertainment and three New York Drama Desk nominations. They also earned a Perrier Comedy Award nomination.

Fascinating Aïda Cheap Flights is produced by Steven M Levy, Sean Sweeney by special arrangement with John Mackay and David Johnson

Stay Awake is produced by dubstep lords Nero and is yet another huge dance anthem from Example who kills it with his trademark combination of thought provoking lyrics and massive choruses. ‘Stay Awake’ was penned after waking up at Ibiza Rocks and seeing hundreds of kids still going from the night before.  Example says ‘it’s about a messed up generation who spend all their money on partying and questioning whether or not it's right. We spend all our money to stay awake the longest’.

Coinciding with the release of her latest album, Daydream, released October 10th on Warner Bros Records, the album is her most personal to date drawing together music and songs she loves from across classical, traditional, folk and easy pop that have inspired her over the course of her life.

Tickets for the extensive tour go on sale Friday 2nd September.

Recorded in Los Angeles and London in spring this year, Katherine has once again teamed up with John Shanks in the U.S (credits include Take That & Westlife and Katherine’s hit 2010 single Tell Me I’m Not Dreaming), and Simon Franglen in London (credits include Barbra Streisand, Céline Dion and the Oscar nominated soundtrack to James Cameron’s Avatar).

Stand out tracks on the album include the stunning Shanks produced Break It To My Heart, a deeply moving interpretation of the Celtic classic Black Is The Colour, I Dreamed A Dream from Les Misérables rarely performed in French, a brand new composition of Ave Maria and Katherine’s stirring tribute to service men and women through the ages A Flower Tells A Story.

The Daydream tour will also see Katherine perform some of her best-known songs that she has performed and recorded over her last seven albums including tracks from her debut album Premiere through to her best selling album Believe.

Katherine says “I had an amazing time on my first arena tour but Daydream is a very intimate album and I wanted my tour to reflect that.  It's a chance for my fans to see me up close and personal in some of the UK's most beautiful theatres”.

As one of the UK’s best-loved artists, with album sales in excess of 5 million copies, her new album, Daydream, reflects her success here and abroad (her last album Believe went platinum in many countries) and signals the start of the next stage of her life.

DEF LEPPARD And MOTLEY CRUE Join Forces For 2011 UK Arena Tour

Def Leppard And Mötley Crüe
Join Forces For The First Time Ever To Tour The UK

With Very Special Guests Steel Panther

TUESDAY 30TH AUGUST – Live Nation are thrilled to announce that two of the world’s most legendary purveyors of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe, have joined forces for the first time ever, for a tour that will see them tear through 6 cities in the UK this December with very special guests, Steel Panther.

Def Leppard remain one of the world’s biggest and most successful live acts. Before this year, the band last played the UK and Eire in 2009 – headlining Download festival that year after a hugely successful sold out UK Arena tour in 2008. June 2011 saw Def Leppard headline Download Festival for the second time in three years. 2011 has also seen the release of the band first ever live album, “Mirrorball” featuring classic tracks, three band new recordings and a bonus DVD and Leppard's first coffee table book, titled "Def Leppard – The Definitive Visual History”.

With more than 65 million albums sold worldwide and two prestigious Diamond Awards (Def Leppard are one of only five rock bands to have two consecutive 10 million plus selling albums in the U.S. The others are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Van Halen.) to their credit, Def Leppard - Joe Elliott (vocals), Phil Collen (guitar), Rick "Sav" Savage (bass), Vivian Campbell (guitar) and Rick Allen (drums)— continue to be one of the most important forces in rock music. Over the course of their career, the band has produced a series of classic groundbreaking albums that set the bar for generations of music fans and artists alike. The group’s spectacular live shows, filled with powerful melodic rock anthems, continue to sell out venues worldwide. Their epic live show and arsenal of hits have become synonymous with their name, leading Def Leppard to be heralded as an institution in both the music and touring industry.

Motley Crue
Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott says, “I can't tell you enough how thrilled I am to announce this tour!! ... We always strive to make our shows an event & to have Motley Crue & Steel Panther along for the ride makes this an event that just can't be missed for rock fans across the UK !! ... Come join us on what will be the event of the year!!”

Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, Tommy Lee and Vince Neil , collectively Mötley Crüe, returned to the top of the charts with Saints of Los Angeles, their first studio album in a decade with the original line-up back in 2008. Based on the band’s New York Times bestseller ‘The Dirt’, the disc debuted at #1 on the Independent Album chart and was the top debut of the week on the Billboard Top 200 albums at #4. “Saints of Los Angeles,” which was nominated for a Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy Award was also noted as the #1 Rock Song of the Year by iTunes critics. The band also started Crüe Fest in 2008, which was the most successful touring rock festival and the number ten tour overall (according to Rolling Stone), playing for nearly half a million rock fans throughout North America. This was swiftly followed by Crüe Fest 2 in 2009, during which the band played the whole of the Dr Feelgood album every night in celebration of their 20th anniversary. Mötley Crüe has sold more than 80 million album copies worldwide, including 25 million in the U.S. ). They will also be releasing a brand new expanded Greatest Hits package which will include the Crüe Fest DVD in November.

SIR TOM JONES Forced To Cancel Last Night's Monte Carlo Gig Due To Health Scare

Written By Steve Stubbs on Sunday, 28 August 2011 | 16:21

SIR TOM JONES

Sir Tom Jones was due to appear at the Sporting Club, Monte Carlo, closing a festival which had featured Bryan Ferry and Sting last night (27th Aug).

Statement:

"Sir Tom was ordered by doctors not to perform in Monte Carlo yesterday evening, due to severe dehydration. This was extremely disappointing for Tom, the band and all connected with the tour. This was the last date of a very successful 3 month tour, where many of the shows were in locations that were in the throes of high summer heat.  There are NO heart problems, as has been reported in the press.

Sir Tom wants to relay his deep regrets for causing disappointment and inconvenience to all who would have come to enjoy his show last night. He thanks everyone for their understanding and support and hopes to see the fans in Monte Carlo again soon."

From all at Backstage Pass, we wish Sir Tom a speedy recovery

THE OVERTONES To Release Platinum Edition Of 'Good Ol' Fashioned Love' On 10th October

Written By Steve Stubbs on Friday, 26 August 2011 | 15:18

THE OVERTONES

To coincide with their extensive autumn tour, Britain’s hottest male vocal group release the Platinum Edition of their Top 5 album ‘Good Ol’ Fashioned Love’. In addition to the twelve songs from the original album, the Platinum Edition has three brand new songs including their new single ‘Second Last Chance’ (released October 10th).

‘Second Last Chance’ is a vintage-pop song that, like the band themselves, mixes the tradition of American vocal groups with the best of classic, present-day British pop. With its swagger and bop, this new single fits in harmoniously with classics from their Top 5 album such as ‘Sh-Boom’, ‘Why Do Fools Fall In Love’ and their recent original single, ‘Gambling Man’.

Similarly, new original recordings ‘Say What I Feel’ and ‘Whoops’ acknowledge the impact and influence of great vocal groups, such as The Temptations, The Drifters and The Five Satins, whilst reflecting The Overtones’ pop sensibility and broad contemporary appeal. “Vocal harmony groups have had the great fortune of being able to traverse musical styles from doo-wop through soul, Motown and R&B. We've really enjoyed extending The Overtones’ sound to new tracks on the Platinum Edition album.”

Having originally formed in 2006, it has taken them some time to get here, so of course now that they have arrived, The Overtones are raging with ambition. The tours are getting bigger, and they want them to be bigger still. On completing a sold-out tour in March The Overtones announced a national theatre tour in October, including such prestigious venues as the London Palladium which is already sold out.

The Overtones are: Mark Franks, Mike Crawshaw, Darren Everest, Timmy Matley and Lachie Chapman

Review: YELLOWIRE 'Machines On Fire' Album Launch - On A Houseboat Somewhere In London!

YELLOWIRE

So last night, we were at the 'Machines On Fire' album launch for Yellowire.

Set on a lovely Houseboat somewhere in London, the invited audience were treated to some lovely food and drinks, and a set from Yellowire before they head off to Reading and Leeds Festivals this weekend...

But who are Yellowire? I hear you ask.
Yellowire is a project lead by Ol Beach, whose previous band Wire Daisies had a brief outing in the charts reaching number 1 on iTunes in France and the UK. They also toured Europe with Starsailor, and supported Robbie Williams in South Africa.

Since forming last year, Yellowire have played HMV’s Next Big Thing, Isle of Wight Festival, Rock am Ring & Rock im Park – Germany, Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park and Latitude festival.

Last nights secret gig was fantastic... the band sounding great, playing songs from the album such as the aptly named 'Where is Summer',  'Starlife' and 'Machines On Fire'.

Yellowire are the ones to watch out for this year with their blend of electro-acoustic anthems.

A delight to listen to, and deserve a huge welcome into the music world.

GARY BARLOW enlists Labrinth, Wretch 32, Tulisa, Ed Sheeran and more for this year's Children In Need single

Written By Steve Stubbs on Thursday, 25 August 2011 | 14:43

Labrinth, Tinchy, Chipmunk and Wretch 32
Come Together To Help
 BBC Children in Need and
release official single ‘Teardrop’ on Nov 13th

The official BBC Children in Need single will get one of its most credible makeovers to date this year as the likes of Labrinth, Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk, Wretch 32 and Tulisa from NDubz present their own re-interpretation of Massive Attack’s timeless single ‘Teardrop’, with the new lyrics adapted by Wretch 32, Gary Go and Mr Dialysis. The song will be released through Island Records on November 13th with all proceeds going to the charity to support some of the most disadvantaged children right here in the UK.

Gary Barlow was asked by BBC Children in Need organisers to come-up with an idea for the official single this year and immediately contacted Labrinth (famed for his production on Tinie Tempah’s ‘Pass Out’ which won Best British Single at The BRIT Awards 2011) to produce it. Together they assembled a group that makes up the cream of the UK grime scene including: Chipmunk, Dot Rotten, Ed Sheeran, Ms Dynamite,
Mz Bratt, Rizzle Kicks, Tinchy Stryder,
Tulisa and Wretch 32.

The institution that is the official CiN single has always held a special place in our hearts and record collections. Since 1997 BBC Children in Need has achieved six No.1 singles and six more in the Top Ten; recorded by artists including JLS, The Spice Girls, Peter Kay, Lou Reed, S Club 7 and Will Young. This year’s collective, who have earned five No.1 singles between them already, will have a name to represent the group chosen for them through a fan competition launched today. The song is adapted from the original ‘Teardrop’ by Massive Attack – who also gave their blessing for the song to go ahead.

Labrinth & Co assembled at Metropolis Studios at the beginning of this week to record the song and shoot the official video, which will premiere in the run-up to release.

BBC Children in Need supports children living in the UK facing a range of disadvantages including: poverty and deprivation, disabled young people and children who have been victims of abuse or neglect. The spectacular live Appeal Show will be broadcast live on BBC1 on Friday November 18th.

Review: South Pacific - Barbican Centre, London

Weds 24th Aug - 7.30pm A full house this evening to see the Lincoln Center Theater production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.

The show cloth opens and the audience is transported to a tropical island in the South Pacific with a shimmering ocean, golden sand, palm trees and the grand home of frenchman Emile De Becque (Paulo Szot). The lighting subtly changes as evening falls with an array of sunset colours, adding to the island ambience. Through the rest of the production the set develops into a field office, soldier's camp, and the mystical island of Bali Ha'i.

Vocals are strong throughout the production with some lovely tone. A particular mention goes to Paulo Szot who's rich baritone quality brings maturity and sensitivity to his character Emile De Becque. His heartfelt interpretation of 'Some Enchanted Evening' was a real highlight of the show.

Samantha Womack (playing Nellie) has a voice suited to Rodgers & Hammerstein with a delicate range and ease. She adapted well to the different tempi of her songs and added real American charm to nurse Nellie. Numbers that were performed exceptionally well by Womack were 'A Cock-Eyed Optimist' and 'Honey Bun'.

A special mention must also go to Loretta Ables Sayre (playing Bloody Mary). Experienced in this role, Sayre brings both strong character and vocals to the native Bloody Mary and her performance of 'Bali Ha'i' is a real treat
The remainder of the cast supported the production and portrayal of the story effectively and added to the  wartime spirit.

Although South Pacific is one of the longer musicals to be performed, the tropical set and talented cast ensured I really did have an 'enchanted evening' at the Barbican.

South Pacific runs until 1st October - Buy tickets HERE
