Single Review: Michael Kiwanuka – I’m Getting Ready – Released 12th March 2012

Michael Kiwanuka – I’m Getting Ready – Released 12th March 2012

Michael Kiwanuka is the latest artist to be released through Polydor/Communion records as he releases his new single I’m Getting Ready from his debut album Home Again on the 12th March 2012. Having topped this years BBC Sound Of poll as a somewhat surprise winner, the singer/songwriter brings a folk-influenced soul track as his first offering.

Michael’s voice is rich and mellow, giving a hint of the old-time classics while maintaining a modern feel to his music. I have seen his composition style be compared to that of a male Adele, but I think I would place him closer to Norah Jones in terms of style.

The track begins with a basic fingerpicked guitar before adding interchanging blues style chords as the voice enters. Percussion is basic, with just a dust-brush jazz styled setup. There is a strong religious vibe, both from the lyrics and gospel elements from the backing singers.

I have to admit that I’m not blown away by it, even after a fifth listen I still don’t find it a particularly memorable track. It’s pleasant enough, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t see it being a track I would download for further listening. It almost seems as if it is too short in length to really make a lasting impression, and at 2 minutes 25 it is a good minute shorter than most of its competition. What is refreshing however is to see an artist doing well off honest, good, soulful music and I welcome Michael Kiwanuka for that reason.
