Gig Review: Paul Simon - Hard Rock Calling, Hyde Park ✭✭✭✭

Paul Simon

Hard Rock Calling
Hyde Park

Sunday 15th July 2012: Another packed out park playing host to the final evening of this years Hard Rock Calling on the woodchip ground, and the rain finally stayed away.

Paul Simon was headline act this evening, and did a three hour set to please the crowds, coming on earlier than scheduled to possibly beat the curfew after last nights Bruce Springsteen shenanigans.

Opening with Kodachrome, Paul was playing guitar, wearing a hat, and the audience were loving it. After 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, Paul introduced us to a good friend of his, Jimmy Cliff, who came on and did four songs, starting with The Harder They Fall, everybody was dancing away.

Later in the set, one of my favourites Slip Slidin' Away had us all singing along, and even more guests entertained the capacity crowd. Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela and well known hits such as Diamonds on the Sole of Her Shoes, Graceland and Free Nelson Mandela.

A huge cheer for the final song of the set, You Can Call Me Al. Everybody singing and dancing away.
Two encores tonight including The Sound Of Silence, and to finish the night off, Still Crazy After All These Years.

Paul Simon showed that he can entertain huge audiences, and it was a pleasure to spend a Sunday evening listening to all the classic tracks from over the years. A great end to Hard Rock Calling.
