Theatre Review: The Bodyguard - Adelphi Theatre ✭✭✭✭✭

The Bodyguard
Adelphi Theatre

Wednesday 11th June 2014: So there's a new Queen of the Night in residence at the Adelphi Theatre, and we were there at the recent media night of The Bodyguard to see Alexandra Burke taking over as leading lady Rachel Marron.

Alexandra Burke was the winner of the fifth series of The X Factor in 2008, and has become one of the most successful winners in the programmes history, with a number one single and becoming a platinum selling artist in record time.

Alexandra's vocals have a certain breathiness and subtle tone to them, along with a slice of powerhouse diva edging in at times. She plays a feisty yet loveable Rachel Marron alongside Tristan Gemmill's fearless bodyguard Frank Farmer. The huge classic I Will Always Love You towards the end of the show made my hair stand on end, it is such a powerful and emotional song and alexandra did it justice. To follow in the footsteps of the magnificent Beverley Knight, who has recently vacated the role, this was always going to be a huge effort, and Alexandra has done a fine job indeed, bringing along her own passion for the role.

I must also give a nod to the remarkable vocal talents of Carole Stennett who plays Rachel's sister Nicki Marron, a mind blowing performance, and when she does a duet with Alexandra, well, that really takes The Bodyguard biscuit!

As always, the technical side of the show is beautiful to watch, the lighting and projection blends seamlessly, the surround sound which accompanies the action is terrific, the band sound great, nicely balanced with the vocals, and the set is a joy to watch.

The Bodyguard is still one of the hottest shows in the West End, and after this performance I can see why, go grab a ticket as soon as you can and at the end of the night have a dance with somebody!
