The Birmingham Stage Company are bringing their production of The Firework-Maker’s Daughter by the multi-award winning writer Philip Pullman to London’s Bloomsbury Theatre this December. It tells the story of Lila, whose dreams of becoming a firework-maker are dashed when her father tells her it is no job for a girl. Setting out in secret for Mount Merapi in search of the elusive royal sulphur, Lila faces pirates and supernatural creatures - and soon she has to return to save her imprisoned father with a firework display that must rival the best on earth!

Author Philip Pullman is best known for the hugely popular trilogy ‘His Dark Materials,’ the first part of which was made into the film ‘The Golden Compass’ with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. His Sally Lockhart series of books is also very successful and two of the stories have been adapted for TV starring Billie Piper. The Firework-Maker’s Daughter’ is one of Pullman’s earliest works which he originally created as a classroom piece for his pupils at Bishop Kirk’s School in Oxford and it was later published as a novel.

The Firework-Maker’s Daughter is adapted for the stage by Stephen Russell, directed by Phil Clark with designs by Jackie Trousdale, lighting by Jason Taylor and music by Jak Poore. Laura Durrant plays Lila.
