Review: Mr Scruff - Koko, London
Mr Scruff
Saturday 18th February 2012: A sold-out Koko was treated to a 6 hour masterclass by Andy Carthy, aka Mr Scruff. On a rare trip to London, the Manchester-based DJ brought his unique live show down south for one night only. With a set that ranged from Jungle to Jazz via Motown, the set was intelligently put-together and progressive.
There were huge responses to Mr Scruff's own Funky House tunes from his seminal albums 'Trouser Jazz' and 'Keep it Unreal'. A number of his mixes are available online at soundcloud.com/mr-scruff; check these out to hear an impeccably put-together, eclectic set.
With a career stretching back to 1984, Mr Scruff has become a mainstay of the house scene and as well as DJ-ing, he runs a tea shop and sells his own teas, mugs and teapots (more info at www.makeusabrew.com if you're interested. I can recommend the 'Big Chill' tea).
Koko is a fantastic venue, with many great views of the stage and a fun atmosphere. One tip though, if you're heading to Koko for a night out, get saving as the drinks ain't cheap.
Mr Scruff will be back at Koko on 19 May and will be playing the Snowbombing Festival in Mayrhofen.
