Gig Review: Matt Cardle - Scala, London ✭✭✭✭✭
Matt Cardle
Tuesday 22nd October: The former X factor winner from the seventh series is back and entertaining a busy Scala in anticipation of his album release, Fire on 29th October. With what could be described as a note perfect performance, Matt performed songs from his debut album Letters and the new album which is days away from release.
With a simple stage setting, smoke machines and low stage lighting, it calls for all attention to be focused on the talent, nothing else is required. Matt is backed by a tight backing band and two soulful singers, it’s clear that he is one of the better performers to come out of a talent show.
He played the title track from the new album ‘The Fire’ and a song called ‘Empire’, which he introduced as being about someone who has yet to materialise, the love of his life. An obvious fan favourite already, it was a beautiful song, with almost anthem-like chorus. It’s songs like these that show off the talent of Matt’s voice, the dynamic vocal range is flawless.
Another emotional song from the new album is ‘Water’, Matt introduces this song, it’s about losing someone and losing them altogether, “this one’s for Dickie, we all lose someone at some point but I actually lost this person, they’re not there anymore”. A stunning track, beautifully written, it is a higher octave, revealing Matt’s undeniable vocal talent.
Matt thanks everyone for buying this one and he sings his debut and winning X Factor single ‘When We Collide’. Also for an extra treat Matt covers the well-known single; “and if you don’t know it you’ve obviously been hiding under a rock” stated by Matt, ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ by Gotye.
Matt finishes the night on an encore, with the song ‘Lately’, which Matt says is his favourite song from the new album, and is about looking up.
Since seeing Matt live I can clearly see how talented he is, his voice is simply outstanding, I can only encourage you to go and see him live. I wish him all the best with his new album, and hope he gets the credit he clearly deserves.
