Panto Review: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - New Wimbledon Theatre ✭✭✭

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
New Wimbledon Theatre

Review by Charlotte Barrett

Mirror, mirror on the wall, where can I find the fairest panto of them all? Alas, not in Wimbledon!  Argh, I'm sorry to start off so negative but one must be honest when writing.

Yep, another panto. I can't help it, I'm drawn to cheese, spangles and anywhere where I can shout stuff at strangers, and there is nothing like a propa' pantomime to get you in a Christmassy mood.

After the magnificent Aladdin at the O2, and after seeing the cast list, my expectations for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at New Wimbledon Theatre were high. The thought of Priscilla Presley, Warwick Davis and Jarred Christmas dressed to the nines in their best spandex was almost too much to bare.

I'm so so sad to report that unfortunately it didn't meet my expectations. I can't quite put my finger on the reason why, but some parts were painful to watch. If it wasn't the costumes, the sound of Priscilla's weak, and at times mimed performance, it was the flat notes coming from Snow Whites "redder than rose" lips. Yeah, I know I sound harsh but honestly the whole production had a terrible air of amateur dramatics about it.

I'd vote for less dialogue and more tunes. Which brings me to another point, I was expecting at least some original songs but instead, my ears were pricked with the opening act of "You don't know your beautiful" by One Direction. The show ended with Warwick Davies dressed as PSY belting out "Gangnam Style" *sigh* I've had Gangnam overload over the past few months; when will this madness stop!

Warwick Davis and the rest of the Severn Dwarves on the other hand were fab! As was Jarred Christmas who provided the light and infrequent adult jokes.

I'm afraid there isn't much to say other than that. It was perfectly average. You expect a panto with such big "names" to be able to give a better performance, and really their presence didn't really add much to the show. I feel I could've got the same performance from my local amateur dramatics down the road.

3 out of 5 stars, average, not the best and not as polished as I hoped. Give me Aladdin any day! ✭✭✭

Snow white and the Seven Dwarves runs at New Wimbledon Theatre until 13th January 2013
