Camilla Whitehill's Mr Incredible takes on modern love at Underbelly Cowgate
Adam is single. He doesn’t like it. He misses Holly. He deserves Holly. Doesn’t he?
Mr Incredible is a brutal new play about modern love and old-fashioned entitlement from the award-winning writer/director team behind Edinburgh Fringe 2015 sell-out show Where Do Little Birds Go?.
Camilla Whitehill’s second play is a stark exploration of control, anger, and the lengths we go to stay in one place. It asks difficult questions that call for us to explore ourselves, talk and take action, not simply to think and then forget - questions that are paramount within the vital discourse around male privilege and sexual consent. Mr Incredible is the study of one man who is forced, through circumstance, to self-reflect.
Writer Camilla Whitehill comments, "I didn’t write Mr Incredible purely out of anger. I wrote it because I wanted to come at an issue from the opposite side. I wrote it because the patriarchy harms everyone. I wrote it because I thought it would start conversations. The play isn’t a statement, it’s a question. it’s an offering. I want people to feel they can engage with and respond to it in any way they want. I don’t want it to be didactic, I don’t think that’s what art is for. It is meant to be recognisable. It’s not an out-of-the-ordinary story. It’s the very worst of the every day. It’s the dirty in the mundane."
Longsight Theatre makes award-winning, intimate theatre with a focus on new writing. Camilla Whitehill is currently one of 12 writers on the Channel 4 4Screenwriting programme, and part of the 2016 Bush Theatre Emerging Writers’ Group.
