Review: Smith & Burrows Live at Union Chapel, London

12th December 2011The Union Chapel is fast becoming one of London’s hottest venues to catch the latest musical acts. Last night was no exception with a sell out gig by Smith & Burrows. The duo consists of the Editors frontman Tom Smith and ex-Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows who presented tracks of their latest Christmas themed album ‘Funny Looking Angels’.

Described as “a Christmas anthem for modern times” by Q magazine the album plays out 10 festive themed tracks of a distinctive non-cheesy quality. Last night we were treated to a number from the album. Best received and by far a favourite was the title track ‘Funny Looking Angels”.

However, determined not to disappoint, the duo also dipped into their song writing anthology and performed the ever popular Razorlight tracks ‘America’ and ‘Falling to Pieces’. There was also a cover version of REM’s ‘Half a World Away’ all complete with a surprise guest appearance from Editors drummer Ed Lay who rather expertly took up some sleigh bells.

If you’re still struggling for Christmas presents this year then ‘Funny Looking Angels’ is the perfect gift! There’s something for everyone and I have a feeling that the names Smith & Burrows will be regarded as two of the greatest songwriters of this century.
