The Menier Chocolate Factory announces forthcoming season

THE MENIER CHOCOLATE FACTORY
ANNOUNCES FORTHCOMING SEASON

The Menier Chocolate Factory announces its 2012 season, following on the success of Abigail’s Party, its fastest selling play to date. The forthcoming season for main house shows runs from May 2012 and to February 2013.

Torch Song Trilogy by writer and actor Harvey Fierstein will play from 30th May to 12th August, and is directed by actor and director Douglas Hodge. Hodge won the Olivier award in 2009 and the Tony award in 2010 for his role as Albin in the Chocolate Factory production of La Cage aux Folles – also written by Harvey Fierstein. Advance tickets for this production go on sale to Chocolate Factory Supporters from 9th April, with general public sales from 18th April.

This Tony award winning drama tells the poignant story of an outsider’s search for love and acceptance. Originally conceived and performed in three acts, drag queen Arnold encounters passion, thrills, love and loss. This intimate and powerful play is bursting with courage and sharp wit, as Arnold fights for his place in the world and his right to happiness.

Charley’s Aunt by Brandon Thomas plays from 20th September to 10th November. Ian Talbot returns to the Chocolate Factory following his production of The Invisible Man in 2010 to direct. Advance tickets for this production go on sale to Chocolate Factory Supporters from 2nd July, with general public sales from 11th July.

Charley’s rich Aunt, Dona Lucia, is visiting from Brazil (where the nuts come from!).  The timing couldn’t be better.  Her presence as a chaperone will allow him and his cohort Jack to invite their respective true loves, Amy and Kitty, for luncheon to ask for their hands in marriage.   Time is ticking, Amy is soon to leave for Scotland, but where is Charley’s Aunt?   On learning she is delayed by several days, scuppering their romantic plans, they blackmail their eccentric friend, Lord Fancourt Babberley, to pose as Dona Lucia.  Hilarity and chaos ensue as the imposter Aunt is courted by Jack’s father and Amy’s guardian.  And then Charley’s real Aunt arrives…

The Stephen Sondheim/George Furth musical Merrily We Roll Along will play from 16th November to 23rd February 2013. The musical is directed by Olivier award winning actress Maria Friedman, who returns to the Chocolate Factory for her directorial debut, following the success of her show Maria Friedman: Re-arranged and the 2010 production of The Invisible Man. Advance tickets for this production go on sale to Chocolate Factory Supporters from 3rd September with general public sales from 12th September.

Based on the play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical charts the relationship of three friends over three decades in the entertainment business. This moving story features some of Sondheim’s most beautiful songs including ‘Good Thing Going’, ‘Not a Day Goes By’ and ‘Old Friends’.

From March 27th, the Chocolate Factory launches its inaugural Chocolate Factory Supporter Scheme, with great features and benefits for subscribers. Full details can be found on the company website www.menierchocolatefactory.com
