Theatre Review: The Thing About Men - The Landor Theatre, London

The Thing About Men

Friday 18th May: ‘The Thing About Men’ is a fantastic musical rendition of Doris Dories’ German romantic comedy ‘Men’. Writer and lyricist of the piece, Joe DiPietro, successfully portrays the issues of modern-day love and relationships within this hilarious masterpiece.

Tom, played by Peter Gerald, is a successful, womanizing middle-aged businessman who decides to move out of the house he shares with his wife, Lucy, played by Kate Graham, after she confesses to having an affair. In shock he moves out of their house and, without revealing his true identity, moves in with his wife’s lover the attractive artist, Sebastian, played by John Addison. The relationship that Sebastian and Tom form is a whirlwind of competitiveness and egotistical behaviour that eventually turns into long term friendship.

Despite being a small cast of five, the vocal harmonies and projection could match that of any sizable West End cast. In particular, Lucyelle Cliffe, who plays various characters, packs an almighty punch with her vocals leaving the hairs on the back of your neck on end. The musical numbers played by the amazing all female three piece band, reflects the dizzying roller coaster of emotions that accompany the mad pursuit of love, life and happiness.

‘The Thing about Men’ is a story about strange circumstances and the limits of friendship and love, the brilliant combination of wit and catchy musical numbers will leave you singing and chuckling for days. A must see for any lover of a good rom-com or musical, but also for any man or woman wishing to have an insight into the world of men– take it from me it’s a very entertaining place!
