Tchaikovsky meets Street Dance with SWAN LAKE RELOADED at London Coliseum in August
SWAN LAKE RELOADED
LONDON COLISEUM
6-10 August 2013
Since its premiere in 1895, Tchaikovsky's
Swan Lake has been an inspiration for generations of choreographers and
directors. Now Sweden’s Fredrik Rydman brings SWAN LAKE RELOADED - where Tchaikovsky
meets Street Dance - to the London Coliseum for seven performances only from 6
– 10 August 2013.
As one of the founder member of Bounce
and with a background as a dancer in the Cullberg Ballet, Rydman has created an
eclectic mixture of street and contemporary dance, which fuses with modern
technology to transport Swan Lake into the 21st century. Integrating
the technical, acrobatic and highly sophisticated choreography of street dance
into a familiar narrative concept, SWAN LAKE RELOADED is one of the most
spectacular re-imaginings of the classic ballet in recent memory.
There are no tutus or traditional
ballet elements here; smartphones, motorised sets and dazzling special effects create
a totally new environment for this incarnation of Swan Lake, which is unlike
any other dance show London has ever seen. Rydman not only uses the remixed
music of Tchaichovsky but also work that was originally composed for the show
by a host of Swedish and international pop, rock and electro musicians,
including Moneybrother, Salem Al Fakir and Adiam Dymott.
The iconic tale of Prince
Siegfried and Odette is seamlessly transported into the modern age. The swans
become heroin-addicted prostitutes, dressed in white fur and high-heeled boots.
Rothbart, now a pimp and drug dealer, rules with an iron fist and controls his
‘swans’ with drugs. As Odette and Prince Siegfried fall in love, Rothbart uses
any means he can to quash their budding romance. In a world of greed,
addiction, lies and deception, love must conquer temptation and break
Rothbart’s evil spell.
The show premiered in Stockholm
in December 2012 where it proved a huge hit with over 70,000 tickets sold. It
went on to enjoy sell-out seasons in Berlin, Essen, Frankfurt, Munich and
Vienna, and will visit Gothenburg, Hamburg and Paris later in 2013.
Rydman is best known in his
capacity as a founding member of the successful Swedish dance company Bounce
with which he created and toured ten productions around the world, including
Insane in the Brain. In the
fall of 2012, he was the Creative Director and choreographer for the Swedish X-Factor
and he is currently the Creative Director for the interval acts at the
Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden.
Lighting designers Linus Fellbom
and Emma Westerberg, who have worked with stars such as Bjork, Damian Rice and
Rufus Wainwright, have created an elaborate and intoxicating light-scape, which
pushes the boundaries of modern theatre technology.
Set and costume designer Lehna
Edwall is a regular collaborator with Rydman, whose numerous credits include
set designs for Stockholm City Theatre, the Royal Danish Theatre and Royal
Dramatic Theatre for shows such as HEdda Gabler, Death of a Salesman and Angels
in America. She recently custom designed Krister Henrikson’s costumes in six
episodes of Wallander.
