Theatre Review: The Gruffalo - Lyric Theatre, London ✭✭✭

The Gruffalo
Lyric Theatre, London
Review by Philippa Stubbs

Tall Stories’ magical, musical adaption of the award-winning picture book by former Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson MBE and Axel Scheffler is back in the West End for Christmas for the sixth time and will be on tour in the UK throughout 2014.

In the space of an hour, the Gruffalo’s audience of excited children and adults are taken on a walk into the deep dark wood with a brave little brown mouse (Susanna Jennings). On the way, we encounter some rather interesting predators: a sly fox, a flight squadron leader Owl and a spangly maraca-shaking snake, all characterised brilliantly by Timothy Richey. Let’s also not forget the hungry Grufallo (Tom Crook), complete with knobbly knees, turned-out toes and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose!

A mix of comedy, dance and catchy songs brought this popular children’s book to life charmingly and the odd little mannerism or word brought laughter to both adults and children alike. There are plenty of opportunities for audience participation and it was lovely to see the youngsters enjoying the story as a whole rather than relying on the fancy visual gimmicks that are often used in children’s productions.

The Gruffalo Live would be a great alternative to panto for your little ones this Christmas season, but you better catch it before it roars its way out of a theatre near you!
