Edinburgh Fringe Review - Closer By Circa ✭✭✭✭

Review by Ellen Cree

‘Closer’ by Circa is not your traditional gymnastic, circus act. Held in the iconic and intimate Underbelly venue with minimalist setting, the Australian group put on a simplistic yet breathtaking performance of incredible tricks that left the whole audience gasping in amazement.

Each of the four performers have a fantastic all round talent, as well as each displaying their individual strengths in solo sections, such including trapeze, rope and strap work. Throughout the group sequences, the quartet showcase their strength along with their balancing and flexibility skills by showcasing their gravity defying abilities.

The performance stays true to its ‘circus without spectacle’ description as the performers wear basic all black trousers and leotards while showing next to no emotion and never breaking silence. This vibe created a sense of awe that all this is just second nature to the performers and they made it look incredibly easy. The music that was played throughout the performance was used effectively and really helped to set the mood for the different sections. Mostly comprised of instrumental pieces, the music, again, added to the simplicity and beauty of the show.

Despite the general lack of emotion, areas of slight comedy did shine through, particularly during the audience participation section which saw the cast make their way through the anxious crowd to select puzzled looking members to bring onstage and perform flips, jumps and spins around them which left everyone seemingly amazed by Circa’s incredible intricacy.

Their performance will leave you thoroughly entertained and questioning your own talents! I'll definitely be back to see the show next year for my third year running if Circa return to the Fringe. Unmissable.
