Irina Kolesnikova stars in Swan Lake at the Edinburgh Playhouse
One of the most famous ballets of all
time, Swan Lake, with Irina Kolesnikova as the
enchanting Odette, opens on 1 September for a limited three
night run at the Edinburgh Playhouse.
Undoubtedly the most famous and
beautiful of all classical ballets, Swan Lake is the
time-honoured tale of love, fate and tragedy that has been enjoyed by audiences
around the world for hundreds of years.
Starring Prima Ballerina Irina
Kolesnikova, The St Petersburg Ballet Theatre has toured the world with their
first-class interpretations of the Russian classics, and will now bring their
stunning production of the much-loved ballet to Edinburgh.
After delighting audiences during the
2015 world tour of Swan Lake, the Edinburgh run will see Kolesnikova reprise
the role of The Swan Princess, Odette, retaining the original, timeless Pepita
and Ovanov choreography and set to a twinkling, haunting score by Tchaikovsky.
In a wonderful tale of magic and
romance, Swan Lake tells the love story between Prince Siegfried and the Swan
Princess Odette, who has been cast under an evil spell by sorcerer Von
Rothbart, trapping her and her companions on the lake and only allowing them to
become human as night falls. The only way to break the spell is for one who has
never loved to love her, The Swan Princess, and so Prince Siegfried takes it
upon himself to break the spell and rescue Odette.
This is classical ballet at its best,
underscored by Tchaikovsky’s glorious and unforgettable music courtesy of The
St Petersburg Ballet Orchestra. With lavish costumes, beautiful sets and a
company of 55, this full-length ballet is one not to be missed.
